Track how you commute and eat each day, and see your estimated carbon footprint.
An average UK week (commute + food only, the same bottom-up figures used on the Stats page) comes to about 0 kg CO2e. You don't need to log every category for this to be useful — here's how this week is looking against that so far.
Only confirmed days (the ✓ button) count toward the totals, chart, and leaderboard below — picking an option saves it as a draft, but it won't add to your figures until you confirm it.
| Day | Mode of transport | Est. CO2e | Confirm |
|---|
For the whole week, not a specific day — tap a beer/glass to set the count (tap it again to clear). Entirely optional.
Rough averages: ~0.5 kg CO2e per beer, ~0.3 kg CO2e per glass of wine, ~0.15 kg CO2e per 25ml shot at 40% ABV (scaled for other strengths) — covering production, packaging, and transport.
Figures are rough estimates for illustration, based on commonly cited average emission factors per passenger-km and per kg of food (e.g. DEFRA / Our World in Data style averages). They will not match your actual footprint exactly.
Car-km uses the same ~0.171 kg CO2e/km DEFRA-style average car factor used for your commute days.
Each box is one week (Mon–Sun). Tap a box to see the day-by-day breakdown.
You and your accepted friends, ranked by this week's average kg CO2e per confirmed day so far, lowest first — not by raw total, so being behind on logging days doesn't make you look artificially better than someone who's kept every day up to date. The total and how many days you've confirmed (out of how many have happened so far this week) are shown next to each person's average. Add friends from the Account page.
Average CO2e per week since each person started confirming weeks, lowest first. Includes a weekly-equivalent share of flights and home electricity (yearly figures from the Stats page, divided by 52), so it isn't just commute and food.
Anonymous, aggregate figures across every account with at least one fully confirmed week — never anyone's individual data or name, just the overall averages and how many people they're based on.
Counted per return trip: ~250 kg CO2e for a short-haul European flight, ~1,600 kg CO2e for a long-haul international one — rough averages, actual footprint varies a lot by distance and cabin class.
Include everyday use like showering (if electric water heating), lighting, heating, and appliances — check a recent bill if unsure. Uses a rough grid average of ~0.2 kg CO2e/kWh, split evenly across everyone in the household.
Uses a rough blended average of ~10 kg CO2e per item — a T-shirt is much less, a coat or a pair of jeans much more.
None of these are required. Leave any of them blank and it's simply left out of your total below — not counted as zero — so skipping a question never makes your estimate look better than it is.
Uses a rough blended gas/oil factor of ~0.18 kg CO2e/kWh, split evenly across your household (same split as home electricity above). Check a recent annual bill if unsure.
Errands, road trips, and other driving beyond the commute you log on the This Week page — uses the same ~0.171 kg CO2e/km car factor.
If yes, adds a rough ~700 kg CO2e/yr for the car's own manufacturing footprint, amortized over an average ~14-year car lifetime — separate from the fuel/charging for trips you log elsewhere in the app.
Uses rough average footprints of ~770 kg CO2e/yr per dog and ~310 kg CO2e/yr per cat — mostly driven by their (often meat-heavy) diet. Answering either one counts the other as 0 if left blank.
Check a recent water bill for this figure (usually shown in m³, sometimes called "cubic metres" or "units"). Uses a rough DEFRA-style combined supply + treatment factor of ~0.32 kg CO2e/m³, split evenly across your household (same split as home electricity and gas above).
Uses MotherTree's bank carbon emissions league table, which estimates each UK bank's indirect footprint from financing fossil fuels, per £ of customer deposits held. Both the bank and a balance need answering for this to count — picking a bank without a balance (or vice versa) leaves it out of your total, same as any other optional field here.
Commute, food, and alcohol are extrapolated from the average of your fully confirmed weeks so far (needs at least one to be non-zero); everything else comes from your answers above. The six optional tiles show “–” until you answer them, and are then included in the total below — and in the UK comparison, which only ever includes the same optional categories you have (alcohol isn't part of that UK comparison at all, since it isn't modeled there). All figures are rough, illustrative estimates.
The Hot or Cool Institute's "1.5-Degree Lifestyles" research sets a 2,500 kg CO2e/yr per-capita consumption footprint as roughly a fair-share target for keeping warming under 1.5°C by 2030 (dropping further for 2040/2050), covering a person's whole lifestyle. It's compared here against your fuller yearly total above (not the This Week page's narrower commute + food weekly figure, which would make this target look artificially easy to beat for no reason other than mismatched scope) — a much closer match, though still not exact, since this app still doesn't track everything (see below).
UK average for the same categories your total above includes, except alcohol (not modeled in this average): roughly 0 kg CO2e/yr. Built the same way as your own total — average UK commute, average week of meat/veggie eating, average flights, average household electricity, and (only if you've answered them) average heating, non-commute driving, car ownership, pets, water usage, and banking — run through the same maths, rather than a generic "average footprint" statistic that covers a lot this app doesn't track (see below). The comparisons below are illustrative ways to picture that number, not precise conversions.
This app tracks commuting, food, alcohol, flights, home electricity, clothing purchases, and (optionally, above) gas/oil heating, non-commute car driving, car ownership, pets, water usage, and banking — a real personal footprint includes a lot more, so treat every total here as a partial, illustrative estimate, not your actual footprint:
This is a large part of why official "average person" footprint figures you may see elsewhere (often 8–10 tonnes CO2e/yr for the UK) run well above the UK average shown above — that number is deliberately scoped to match only what this app measures.
"Match UK average week" sets your goal to the same commute + food UK average shown on the Stats page (only those two, since that's what this weekly goal tracks). "1.5°C 2030 (food + commute)" is our own estimate (~20.2 kg CO2e/week) — there's no official category-level split of the 1.5°C target (see the Stats page for that comprehensive figure), so this applies published 2030 reduction requirements for developed countries (nutrition −47%, mobility −72%, per Hot or Cool Institute research) to the UK-average food and commute figures above. "Match world average week" (~29.0 kg CO2e/week) is the roughest of the three — there's no global equivalent of the UK's national travel/diet surveys, so it's a rough estimate assuming less car use and less meat than the UK figures, reflecting that most of the world's population drives and eats meat less than the UK does on average.
Wasted food still carries the emissions it took to produce, so this scales up your food figures everywhere (This Week, Stats) to account for it — e.g. 10–30% waste means buying/producing about 25% more than you actually eat. Your goal colors the boxes on the Weeks page: green at or under goal, amber a bit over, red well over.
By default, the "Compared to an average week" card on the front page measures you against a bottom-up UK average. Pick one of your own fully confirmed weeks here instead to compare against that real week of yours going forward — only weeks with a “✓ FULL” badge on the Weeks page show up here. Switch back to "UK average" any time.
Off by default — nothing is shared unless you turn this on. If enabled, everything on this page and the Stats page becomes visible to the app developer except your bank/banking answers, which are always left out. Your name, email, and account are never included — the developer only ever sees the raw numbers (commute distance, diet mix, flights, home energy, heating, pets, water, etc.), not who they belong to. This is used purely to sanity-check and improve the UK-average assumptions this app is built on, which are currently rough estimates rather than real measured data.
Only visible signed in as the app owner — pulls every opted-in
user's data via a server-side check on your account email, same
data as the research_profiles/research_weeks
views in supabase/schema.sql. The Excel version loads
a small spreadsheet library on demand (only when you click it), and
splits the data into a "Profiles" and a "Weeks" sheet.
Friends can see your weekly total on the Leaderboard once you've both accepted — never your day-by-day commute or diet detail.
Resets your weekly logs and profile settings (not your friends). Everything is stored in your account, synced across devices you sign in on.
Permanently deletes your account and everything tied to it — your login, profile settings, every week you've logged, and your friend connections. This is different from “Reset all data” above, which only clears your data but keeps your account and login working. Deleting your account cannot be undone.
